Japan Nuclear Disaster Put on Par With Chernobyl

Posted April 12, 2011 8:26 AM

From NYT > Science:

Japan has decided to raise its assessment of the accident at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to the worst rating on an international scale, putting the disaster on par with the 1986 Chernobyl explosion, the Japanese nuclear regulatory agency said on Tuesday.

Original article published in Science section of the New York Times.

What's taking so long to solve this problem? Didn't we learn anything about stopping this kind of disaster from Chernobyl? I feel sorry for the people of Japan, so this isn't a slam against them.

Why on Earth would you build nuclear power plants on an Island that has earthquakes and Tsunami threats and not protect your emergency generators better than what they were? I would think being on an Island I would take every precaution I could to protect them and everything else, even from things that more than likely wouldn't happen. You have to be prepared for the worst.

I hope they get to a solution soon for Japans sake and the rest of the world.

We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Why indeed. I can guarantee you that some bean counters were in on the meeting and when they asked the engineer what it would cost they then asked well what will it cost to protect to only this level of likelihood. It's an economic gamble and it's done all the time. Trouble is, just like gambling, sometimes you loose the bet.

No need to panic, see comments in CR4 post below on the subject which clarifies the slightly misleading title and comments in the article(s).

The only similarity between Fukushima and Chernobyl is that they are nuclear power plants which are/have been in difficulty.

The Chernobyl incident was created by wilfull and egotiscal mismangement of a performance test. Performed outside of the recommended operating parameters and to the exclusion of higher authority.

Fukushima has occurred due to an unprecedented "double whammy" natural event. That being a +9 richter earthquake and a tsunami wave, that has devastated much of the rest of the countries infrastructure in that area.

Unlike the Chernobyl, Fukushima has been responded to by Japanese authorities from the get go. Through the unyeilding eye that is modern communication, we have all had access to relevant (and often unrelevant/hysterical) reporting of information as it became/becomes available.

It will take a long time before any 20/20 analysis can be done on the rights and wrongs of the Fukushima incident. This situation is not over by a long shot, that's the trouble with people today they all want instant results...

I can't count how many people I have heard ask why don't they just "shut it off" ...

I'd be willing to say that 97% of the population have absolutely no idea how nuclear energy is made, and that once started cannot be "turned off". What's even worse, is when people who really don't know what they are talking about go on public television/radio and spout off like they do.

I swear some of the reporters I have seen cover this are just aiming for the biggest "wow" factor, and instill mass panic and fear into something they don't have a basic understanding of.
