How Could Cellular Phones be Harmful to Your Health?

Posted April 12, 2011 8:52 AM

Worldwide increases in cell phone usage have prompted many to question the safety of being regularly exposed to radio frequency energy. How can users determine if they are being exposed to cell phone radiation? How dangerous is cell phone radiation? How can you measure a cell phone's specific absorption rate (SAR)?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electronic Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electronic Components today.

Users should be able to determine pretty easily whether their cell phone is on and transmitting....

But even then, I doubt that the RF energy is harmful to health, because of the low wattage.

I've posted this in a couple of other similar threads. Watch this video when you have time.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting.

Recently there was an article presenting the results of a study which showed radiation emitted from a cellphone's antenna during a call makes nearby brain tissue use 7 percent more energy.

From the article on Wired Science (here):

"Volkow and a team of researchers scanned the brains of 47 people with a cellphone attached to each side of their head. One phone was turned off, while the other had an active call going for 50 minutes. It was muted to prevent the audio from having effects on brain activity.

Twenty minutes into the call, clinicians injected a radioactive form of sugar into each person, then began imaging their brains with a Positron Emission Topography machine. Over the course of 30 minutes, the sugar pooled in the brain's most active regions and revealed the energy use to the brain scanner.

Accounting for normal activity, the subjects showed about a 7 percent boost in sugar use on the side of the head where the active cellphone was."

While the findings did not conclude that such affects would result in health problems, the fact that somethings going on indicates that we should be cautious and continue to investigate.

Also, very interesting.

Now, just imagine how many "variables' or processes -- chemical, electromagnetic, etc. -- at the molecular and/or cellular level, which might be able to be monitored or checked for the effects of cell phone radiation (and other electromagnetic radiation we are subject to, for that matter; power line radiation effects have been observed in cows, for instance). And the implications of those effects. New disease "mechanisms" are being discovered all the time. Does anyone know of such wide-ranging studies?

From that perspective, it's pretty arrogant and premature for anyone to state so categorically, that we know, for certain, cell phones are not harmful to human health. Period. Unless, of course, someone has all this data and would like to open it up for everyone's consumption, critique, analysis, and attempts to duplicate -- or not.
