Can Social Networking Help You at Work?

Posted April 15, 2011 8:59 AM

Specialized groups on certain social networking sites are designed specifically to share knowledge; some groups focus on automation knowledge. Engineers and technicians can help solve each other's problems. What tips can you share about using social networks to get advice on technical problems?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Robotics Systems, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Robotics Systems today.

I usually sit in a dark room and figure out the problem(s) I have to work out. At the moment I have no less than 30 to work out in NY. Haven't even given CA, FL or TX a thought yet. Thank God he invented beer!

Agreed. The question also referred to using social networks to solve problems. I doubt most folks would share knowledge at this magnitude without major concerns around IP. I'm still on the fence as to whether social networks are an appropriate forum for "open innovation".

Can Social Networking Help You at Work?

To me, this borders on being a dumb question. And then the next couple of sentences actually show the irrelevance of the title by explaining that the areas of these "social" sites isn't for social purposes, but for discussing technical issues. Seems to me, a thread like this on CR4 is like preaching to the choir.

Very few employees go through a whole career without asking for, or needing some help -- especially those just joining the workforce. It's the difference between the academic world of getting an education and the real world, where one learns to apply that education.

Come on now, Jimh77, have you never asked anyone a question to solve a problem? You are speaking now from many years of experience. I would agree, most engineers wouldn't ask for help without some effort on their part first. Asking for help isn't demeaning, though.
