Robotics Offers New Hope for Hair Restoration

Posted April 25, 2011 3:59 PM by Sharkles

Medical device company, Restoration Robotics, has obtained FDA 510K clearance for their hair follicle harvesting system. Known as the ARTAS System, Restoration Robotics created it to improve follicular harvesting for men diagnosed with androgenic alopecia and with brown or black straight hair.

The system is a physician-controlled, computer assisted system that ensures accurately detects and harvests follicles through features like small dermal punches, an image guided robotic arm, a computerized interface, and other specialized imaging technologies.

After an in-office procedure, implanted hair strands are left to develop their own blood supply and grow. Growth is said to appear within a few months and will continue for a year for an entire year. This new procedure will be an option for men experiencing hair loss, whereas prescriptions like Rogaine and Propecia were the most common remedy options.
