PC or Programmable Automation Controller?

Posted April 18, 2011 8:20 AM

The evolution of the microprocessor has put serious intelligence into manufacturing equipment, enabling higher overall equipment effectiveness and productivity. Even off the plant floor, many engineers are as comfortable with their personal computer as the in-laws or neighbor across the street. But despite the prevalence of microprocessing power in everything from the cell phone to the mainframe, do engineers need to be careful about what processors — with what I/O — they put on their floor, particularly in view of the Stuxnet virus and its inevitable offspring? What happens when the newest virus comes along?

PLCs and PACs do not get a virus. The Stuxnet was a computer virus, attacking computer software called SCADA with connects to PLCs, PACs etc. Just wanted to make that clear. You do have a point, the most secure system would be one that doesn't interface with computers, just PLCs and HMI. But the advantages of interfacing computers (SCADA) with your PLC control out-ways the risk if you take the proper precautions outlined in this Industrial Networking Security article.
