Measure with Machine Vision or Micrometer?

Posted March 01, 2011 8:12 AM

In this newsletter, we regularly cover how companies, from valve manufacturers to PLC implementers, are adding intelligence to their products so that other vendors can sell software to collect and mine that data, and make your company millions. But is the technology really delivering? If you had a choice between a high tech machine vision system and a micrometer, which would you choose? At what point do you have to let go of the old ways and invest in the new?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plant & Facilities Engineering, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plant & Facilities Engineering today.

depends on the justification. I designed a process that used machine vision to quality test pizza crusts.... With the high volume and the abiliy to test, check, compare, pass or reject on the fly...very efficient and profitable.

Phoenix is right on the money- what are you measuring, what are the tolerances you are looking for, what is the sampling rate, how critical is the measurement to the performance of the product, how skilled is the workforce, or what level of automation are you attempting? If the automated measurement system malfunctions, what is the cost in lost revenues/downtime/rework time? There are many other methods of measuring production, some of which could probably outperform the micrometer or the machine vision system with minimal skill level required and much less investment or potential for failure...
