Scientists Say Real Invisibility Cloak Is In Our Grasp

Posted April 09, 2007 12:20 PM

From Seed Magazine:

Harry Potter fans take note: scientists have finally come up with a workable design for an invisibility cloak. Physicists figured out the complex mathematical equations for making objects invisible by bending light around them last year. A group of engineers at Purdue University in Indiana have now used those calculations to design a relatively simple device that ought to be able to—one day soon—make objects as big as an airplane simply disappear.

Hi nighthawk. Airplanes that are invisable! What happen when another airplane comes along at 500 plus MPH and does not notice that invisable airplane? I think the answer would be one almighty crash and up to a 1000 dead people. I can see the advantage for military aircraft, and/or invisable soldiers, but what if the enemy also makes their soldiers and aircraft invisable? And can you imagine what would happen if thieves and bandits got hold of this technology. No, I prefere to see who is around when I go out. Spencer.

A great application were this technology could be used, is in making the rooftops invisible and allowing more light into the buildings, which will save on the utility bill and also retain the stuctural strenght of the building.

I'm running out of good ideas where this invisibility effect would be used in, to benefit everyone.

Well, no...if light bends around the house, then NO light would get into the house. It would instead light up the ground beneath the house; which would be useful only for basement hydroponics, which is used mostly to grow pot.

So this would be a boon to drug peddlers who'd like to keep their whereabouts unknown, and would like to produce high quality products in natural sunlight.

This could be marvelous!

Since property tax penalizes home improvements, just imagine how much money you could save by hiding your new house from the assessors!

And of course this is a dream come true for every Peeping Tom/thief/assassin/politician.

I'd volunteer to employ the technology in empirical studies of female human behavior, for sure. What about shadows, though?

Assuming they really can redirect light around something without loss, then there'd be no shadows.

Now, if there is some loss of light, then there'd be a truly spooky effect as you move as a phantom shape through the women's dressing room. And there would be a very ghostly shadow.

Oh, and you'd need some other technology to cover the sound of your breathing.

dont worry about the sound of breathing. once they spot the small shadow affect and they know you are there, you wouldnt be breathing much longer.

If this cloaking device can bend light around a house into the basement, it could probably also be bent light around the house out of the basement. In other words, the house would disappear allowing everyone to see straight into your basement.
