Plastic with changeable conductivity developed by chemical engineer

Dr. Yueh-Lin (Lynn) Loo at The University of Texas at Austin has modified a plastic so its ability to carry an electrical current can be altered during manufacturing to meet the needs of future electronic devices. Loo, an assistant professor of chemical engineering, studies the plastic called polyaniline because it could serve as flexible, inexpensive wiring in future products such as military camouflage that changes colors, foldable electronic displays and medical sensors. By combining polyaniline with a chemical that gives it conductivity, Loo discovered she could increase the plastic's conductivity one- to six-fold based on the version of the chemical added. The results involving the chemical polymer acid were published in the April 7 issue of the Journal of Materials Chemistry.

We've allready got that, it consits of a 1mm thick rubber like material that has use as a heater and tolerates rupture without loss in heating performance. Limited to 80 degrees c though. 12 to 240 Volt ac or dc powered, colour Black, textured.

Also it has applications as an emc shield as well.

Car seat/ mirror heating? weapons systems? Underfloor? frost protection?

Anyone interested?

She discovered that adding more conductive agent to the polymer results in a better conductivity. And with this kind of results you can become a professor in Austin?

I must have been a professor when I was a 5 year old child.

What's new?

We are already making millions of euro's a year based on this technology.

Our conductive plastic adapts it's conductivity to the temperature of the core, resulting in the self regulating trace heating tape.

Take a look at the polyswitch devices: they are also made of this stuff.
