Mobile Phones Charged With Energy From Your Voice

Posted May 09, 2011 12:41 PM

From Treehugger:

Using sound waves to charge small devices like cell phones is not a brand new idea. We reported on researchers from Texas A&M and University of Houston working on just such a concept back in 2008. However, there is new research out that could bring us much closer to this futuristic idea.

So, the more you talk the more you can talk?

That's just great... another reason for some phone power users I know to talk on the phone some more.

There should be some way to tap the unlimited power generating potential here. I see dozens of women, every day who seem to have the thing implanted in their ears. God forbid the bimbos dears loose their phones, they would never find their way to the store without someone talking them in.

So, if we set up an amplifier that blasts sound at this contraption and it generates power what's to keep us from having it make more power than it uses. Then, we'd have free perpetual energy and could conquer the world.

Tests of the technology show that 100 decibels of sound can generate 50 millivolts of electricity....

So not only could noise from cell phone conversations be harvested, but so too could car noise be absorbed and put to use.

Of course, putting up sound-insulating walls along highways would be an incredibly expensive proposition for a municipality. The amount of energy harvested would have to be significant to justify the cost -- a whole lot more than 50 millivolts.

Just doesn't seem practical compared to the other energy harvesting concepts such as vibration, or even exercise bikes connected to generators.
