ESCs: Preventing Accidents Waiting to Happen

Posted May 11, 2011 3:35 PM

Tractor trailer operators contend that more effective electronic stability control systems are needed. Recently the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a paper exploring the overall effectiveness rates of electronic stability control systems (ESCs) and roll stability control systems in trucks and tractor trailers. ESCs are designed to prevent rollovers and crashes by helping the driver maintain vehicle control while brakes are electronically applied, and in essence overriding human error. According to the author's research, ESCs can prevent crashes by upwards of 71% under dry conditions. What do you foresee in the future for newer, improved ESCs? Do you think it's possible for an electronic system to override human error entirely?

Sir, we've had ABS/ESCs for many years now and without doubt they contribute to the safety of heavy goods vehicles but it seem that the problem of Jackknifing has not been addressed, During the early eighties a company I worked for used to fit an anti jackknifing device which was like a multi-disc clutch which fitted to the fithwheel plate,In the event of the brakes being applied hard the plates were clamped under pressure to lock the tractor & trailer together stopping the trailer from overtaking the tractor, the system worked as we tested them on the skid bowls that the bus companies used to train their drivers on,but it died a death like all good ideas because of cost, I'm sure that had enough Co's had taken it up the cost would have come down greatly as do all new inventions.
