Is Wireless Charging in the Cell Phone's Future?

Posted May 16, 2011 5:23 PM

The mobile phone market is starting to see the introduction of wireless charging systems including adapters and charging mats and pads. Are there any obvious disadvantages to wirelessly charging cellphones? How does the performance and convenience of wireless charging stack up against the less costly wired charging solutions?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electronic Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electronic Components today.

What real difference? You still need power - the phone still has to be in the correct location.

Not anything I am willing to spend a dime on.

YES, it is less efficient. Aren't we all just crazy about the highest possible efficiency and the least waste??? But, just ask a friend with a pacemaker to use one. The waste/stray field will include him or her. And be ready for medical intervention. If there ever was an invention that should never been introduced, this is. I figure, a massive class action suite will stop it. Until then blooming twits (er. marketing types) will keep pushing it.

Isn't the charging pad/dock/cradle connected to the wall-wart via wires?

Yep! but you get a loss in efficency due to the EM field having to induce a current into the phone.

Again its a marketing thing for people too lazy to plug something in.

One more vote on the efficiency issue. Until they design in a shape similar to an electric toothbrushes' toroid, I know jack...

What happened to 2 stainless strips on opposite sides, ala cordless phones? Is style sooo more important than convenience & efficiency?
