I always wonder about this sort of thing...

What happens if I give it a solved rubik cube?

Back when that first came out, Douglas Hofstadter's "Metamagical Themas" column in Scientific American magazine gave lots of group-theory tie-ins and hints, but without giving the whole game away. Before the "how to solve it" books came out, I came up with some basic routines that took about 3 minutes. One summer, the boat where we were freezing sockeye salmon had a Japanese freighter tied alongside. The Japanese crew had a Rubik's cube, but no luck yet in solving it. One of our fish loader guys tossed it up to me, and I tossed it back in about 3 minutes--to their amazement and consternation. I never became a speed demon with it, but this little incident was lots of fun. Thanks for the memory!
