A Too-modest Beginning?

Posted July 05, 2011 8:52 AM

General Electric announced plans for a power plant in Turkey that combines a 458 MW combined-cycle natural gas facility with a 50 MW solar thermal plant and links a 22 MW wind farm into a shared control system. While this arrangement brings two forms of renewable energy into the grid, their contributions seem modest relative to total plant output. Why shouldn't the generating capacity from wind and solar be higher?

Better to have a modest begining than none.
I'm sure we've all seen grandiose schemes fall by the wayside, while the guy in his shed has build something that actually works.

Saving energy is as important as creating it.

Maybe because Turkey doesn't want to be covered in wind turbines and solar panels to try and match these turbines' output. I'm sure that the almightly dollar (or its Turkish equivalent) is driving this decision and not some desire to be overly green.

It is a combination of financial drivers and a publicity stunt. The 458 MW combined-cycle natural gas facility is the financial driver- probably the most economical means of generating electricity in that particular area. Adding highly visible solar and wind capabilities is a PR stunt, to create the impression that the developers are "environmentally aware". The actual output of the 22 MW wind farm over time will most likely approach 7 MW (assuming ideal siting and perfect wind conditions), while the 50 MW solar farm might yield 25 MW average over long term. When one factors in the cost of real estate and other infrastructure, it is doubtful that the inclusion of wind and solar facilities can be financially justified...
