V2G: Using Idle Batteries for Grid Stability

Posted July 18, 2011 12:51 PM

The high contribution of renewable energy to Denmark's grid makes it a prime proving ground for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. U.S.-based Nuvve plans to exploit the frequent parked status of most electric vehicles (EVs) as a power frequency regulator for the national grid. The EV owner makes the battery available for such service in return for compensation which can approach $10,000 over the vehicle life. On a national scale, is this a viable means of distributed storage for renewables and grid regulation?

"The EV owner makes the battery available for such service in return for compensation which can approach $10,000 over the vehicle life."

Which just about covers the extra wear and tear on the batteries for all the additional charging/discharging cycles that are required.

This seems to be an expensive way to keep the grid stable, but the end users simply foots that bill in the end. So, as long as the consumer is unaware there will be bliss.

I agree. This sounds like the Global Village kit that was discussed a while ago.

I want to go home. Get into my EV, and the charging station does not release me. No AC, I sit there who knows how long?!?

Buddy, what are you smoking?

Sounds cute but well off the mark - I am sure the company is looking for investors though. Kind of like car ports with a solar panel on top - cute but useless.

Denmark exports their surplus power to other countries for pumped hydro storage I have read.

What does it have to do with my concerns, or contentions, Sonny?!?

Considering that the post was not in reply to you I have no idea - Sonny? I am most likely older than you.

This has been the thing to save the world on green sites for years now - and is not practical at all.

Yeah, I am sure it has been on the web. Saving anything? That is firmly outstanding. It is damn well not practical. Other than that, it is a grand idea.

And I respect my elders. After all I am one.

And please like the Sonny moniker.

The green world is full of wonderful ideas that are impractical for various reasons such as economics, science and engineering.

The standard response is that 'there has to be a way' and 'I wish'.

A boss of mine years past used to reply to 'I wish' with 'Crap in one hand, wish in the other and see which fills up first'.
