Ultrawideband Takes Us Closer To Star Trek Tricorders

The use of ultrawideband (UWB) technology to monitor a person's vital signs through sophisticated body-area networks could usher in the next generation of mobile devices for healthcare monitoring. But the development of this technology will take time and more bandwidth, according to a new study by electrical engineers at Oregon State University (OSU).

Can anyone help me out here? I don't understand what these "huge amounts of data" are. How often does bone density need to be sampled, for example?

I guess they must be planning to send data like ECG or EEG signals continuously, for remote monitoring. Makes more sense (to me) to do most of the monitoring locally in a front-end processor, and only send notifications of anomolous data to the remote site.

Indeedy - the worried well (them sorts who put a bent coat-hanger in their gob and go jogging) can clog up bandwidth, so anybodies iffy cardiac signal ain't gonna get thru.

Might be handy for health professionals, but I'm not so sure it's a good thing to unleash it over-the-counter. Money and market forces will decide where (if anywhere) this goes.
