Nailgun Injuries Soar Among Weekend Warriors

Posted April 16, 2007 10:15 AM

From Yahoo! News: Odd News:

Reuters - Take a nation of do-it-yourselfers, add a ready supply of cheap nailguns and what do you get? About 37,000 nailgun injuries a year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since 1991, nailgun injuries have risen about 200 percent, the CDC said in its weekly report on death and disease. "This increase likely corresponds to an increase in availability during the 1990s of inexpensive pneumatic nail guns and air compressors (to power the nail guns) in home hardware stores; however, no sales data are available for confirmation," the CDC reported.

Think of it as evolution in action.

I'm thinking you're too optimistic. I see it as proof of devolution.

Has someone died? I think they would certainly qualify for a Darwin.

One would expect, but did not find any so far.

To have a nail, or numerous nails in your head does not seem lethal! Google for numerous cases.

Even nail gun suicide does not work: http://darwinawards.com/stupid/stupid2004-18.html.

''No vital organs were affected'', that's evolution for you!

I have DIY disease really bad. I have a professional (office) job, but also own and occasionally use, a cement mixer, an electric jackhammer, an electric tile cutter, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, tall ladders, edge grinders, screwguns that use screw strips, circular saws, a sabre saw, axes, picks and hoes, tall ladders (and ivy that needs triming), sledgehammers, not to mention my guitar amp hobby that puts me near 400-500 VDC sources...and I still have both eyes and 10 fingers. The clock is ticking, though, and the near misses are mounting.

As a victim of a nail gun injury (web of skin between thumb and index finger)... stupid brother; I can sympathize with those 37,000 poor souls.
