Is Standardized Test Equipment a Source of Salvation?

Posted April 16, 2007 4:19 PM by wmaczka

Designers say that one of the biggest challenges facing the automotive industry is the need to standardize the test equipment to reduce overall test costs. An article in the upcoming April issue of Electronic Test Equipment, as well as in a recent issue of Test & Measurement World notes that the content of engine control units, for example, is increasing 10% annually. What standard tests can be applied? And, are you facing similar challenges in your industry segment?

Manufacturers are avoiding this because it means making some of their electronic innards part of a common standard. If this happens joe corner mechanic can plug in and test their cars and tell what is wrong. They do not want this. They want even the hookup and readout to their computer to be a $75 + event and then they wanto do the repairs. Legislated standards will work.

test equipment sellers start on each new car to develop test interfaces that do not infringe any copyrights. Car makers counter these. Every year they lose a little ground

Aurizon,

But we are talking about testing of a product at the initial assembly stage -- mass production, mass testing. Do you think the 'standard' test procedures could be developed for products at that phase and still leave vendors the room to 'customize' their data collection and diagnostic operation?

Most manufacturers make test cells with a number of standard simplified test instruments made by most manufacturers of insteruments. Either that or make your own test jig, which many people do.

Why do we need test equipment? The engine controller/ ABS / stability control/ digital dash display can self test and report to the dirver what errors and conditions are relevant.
