Posted August 02, 2011 2:51 PM

From msnbc.com: Innovation:

A New York City hospital has stopped asking many patients to dig out health insurance cards and fill in endless forms, instead identifying them by scanning the unique lattice of veins in their palm.

Here is a datasheet for a Fujita PalmSecure. I am not certain this is exactly what is being discussed, but it appears to be the one.

I am always skeptical of a claimed panacea.

What if the patient is hypoxic? What if it is cold outside?

And enrollment takes only a minute? When enrolling, how do you avoid "... patients to dig out health insurance cards and fill in endless forms..."? Isn't that the information that will be linked to your palm scan... oh, and I will sleep better at night knowing that information is electronically stored in yet another unsecure database.

As one who had all my medical information stolen (Healthnet, 5,000,000 people's information was stolen), I agree.

There's no such thing as a secure site.

I'll gladly fish my card out, thank you very much.

Rorschach had a similar experience with compromised personal information. It sounds like it was other than pleasant.

Biometric identity verification is over rated. It is not a panacea (I like that word; and hooters, there's another fun word), and likely never will be. However, any system of identity verification or access control has it's own shortcomings.

That's no good for the patient that has lost a hand....
