BP Raises the Bar

Posted September 07, 2011 8:13 AM

British Petroleum (BP) recently announced new voluntary performance standards for its deepwater drilling operations. Blowout preventers (BOP) will all be equipped with two blind shear rams and an additional casing shear ram. BP will also require extensive laboratory testing of primary casing cement slurries, and third party verification of BOP testing and maintenance activities. They also enhanced their spill response plan based on lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon spill. BP readily admits this is part of their effort to rebuild trust in the Gulf's largest leaseholder. It's quite an assortment of safeguards. Have they forgotten anything?

"Horse" & "Stable door" are the words that spring to mind here!

And now we are all happy? It is a good thing they work on the basic requirements, but with the number of "dubious ones" in use - what will be done to contain a next disaster spill, without poisoning and contaminating oceans?

The what "if" has not been doctored by this action.

all shear rams are inherently blind rams, unless of course, they don't have the power to shear.

I think they have forgotten that, with the BILLIONS the oil companies take in profits each year, people will never believe they are serious about environmental issues. There is oil still on the beaches where the Valdez wrecked. The condition of some pipelines in other parts of the world are deplorable.

Leaving it to the governments to force performance standards looks promising on paper, but these same governments also rake in mountains of cash from oil. I, for one, do not trust my government for one second to protect what is mine.

They've also forgotten TO STAY THE HELL OUT OF MY ARCTIC!

Great. First thing in the morning and I'm p*ssed off already.

Dear Friends, and unfortunately, "Comrades": Didn't I warn you that BP could move Heaven AND Earth, triple-strengthening the blowout preventers, and the Eco-nazis would NEVER be "satisfied", and indeed, here they are, pretending to be years-long oil engineers or even "experts", but they are mere "Sturm und Drang". One even fashions his "symbol" as a MUPPET, as if to establish his "bonifides of criticism". If the USA DOLLAR FALLS...Red China might get our oil-leases as "spoils" from our default, and it won't MATTER what YOU or I WANT--the Red Chinese will DO what THEY want, and friends, they'll care a LOT LESS about environmental concerns than BP, however big a "boogy-man" you want to paint them. The Gulf spill was NOT a failure of a preventer, I've already TOLD you--it was Methane-ice that exploded. As long as they're not drilling around Methane ice, BP will NEVER have an explosion, oh knee-jerk, know-nothing Eco-nazis! Sure, there's sand where the Valdez struck. The guy probably ATE the sand which was there (--say it FAST!), so he "knows"(--just kidding). But the FISH are back, the birds are back,--the area's NOT perfect, but restored very well over the way the Chinese/CIS would leave some spill on another country's shores. Get OVER IT! HOPE BP STAYS! It'll be BETTER for EVERYONE HERE, if BP stewards it, except that the poor-baby Commies'll cry about, boo-hoo!...

Ooooo, till now I've kind of felt like a "lurker". But you changed all that with your personal attack. I remain intact. I can now proudly proclaim that I've finally drawn the ire of another member. Thanks! I look forward to reviewing your comments in the future!

With BP they had to go into a very deep cellar to 'raise the bar'.

The items mentioned are all fine but a proper safety culture is much harder to build - it can not be contracted out or bought - that was BP's main failing.
