The U.S. military is launching a small missile-watching satellite after years of quiet preparation and years of alarming reports from critics about its purpose.
The NFIRE spacecraft had been scheduled to go into orbit on Monday atop a commercial Minotaur booster, but the launch was scrubbed just a half-hour before liftoff due to a problem with ground support equipment. The launch was rescheduled for no earlier than 2:48 a.m. ET Tuesday from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Virginia's Wallops Island.
