Every Baseball Is Rubbed with This Special Mud Before It Gets Used

Posted October 17, 2011 8:28 AM

From Gizmodo:

Baseball, America's past past time, is a pretty quirky game with quirkier players and quirkiest traditions. Chew tobacco! Sunflower seeds! Rally caps! Seventh Inning Stretch! And even a "special mud" that gets rubbed onto every single baseball in the major and minor leagues. Huh?

From the article:

"The tradition of manually rubbing this special mud into balls started in the 1950's..."

Once again those ace reporters from Gizmodo are right on top of the latest tech news.

I suspect this was news to the Giz reporter, who figured there are a number of other twenty-somethings who never played Little League ball who have never heard about deglazing baseballs either.

The De facto National Pastime of the USA is baseball... used to be, anyway. I think today it may be texting. <sigh>

Gizmodo may soon run a feature claiming man has landed on the moon!

Its interesting regardless of age and with post season being played I think pretty relevant. Its easy to pick apart blogs and sources, I just don't see the point.

I agree with you Baxter, it is interesting. This is something I have known about since I was nine years old (which seems about 154 years ago ), but I enjoy baseball stories of all types. Thanks for bringing this to us.

My comment is not intended to pick at Giz or their reporters... I suspect if I picked up a true sports magazine in these days leading up to The Series there might well be a story about baseball mud there as well.

My previous comment is more of a lament: do American youngsters engage in baseball at the age of nine like we used to? When I was a kid (this is just a wild guess), I suppose half of the kids (just boys then) in town played LLB. It was a great experience for me. It seems that the Great American Pastime has had it's heyday, and that saddens me.

No argument there. It seems many young people are more concerned about virtual leagues, but I think that comes down to parenting, not young people themselves.

"...I think that comes down to parenting, not young people themselves."

You are very wise. I have also heard it said "The LACK of Parenting'.

My oldest boy (7 years old) has his last game of the year this Saturday. This is the 3rd league is has been in this year. He isn't very happy that it is going to be over either. He can't get enough of it. I am always playing catch with him in the yard.

It must have been a real slow day in Gizmodo land!

Baxter - When someone posts nonsense we supposed to bow and say oh how wonderful? My ancestors left Ireland & Scotland long back to get away from that.

Rus, you aren't supposed to bow and say how wonderful it is, but there is a higher standard on CR4 that when you post it should be useful or relevant. If you can't say something nice or add value, why bother?

Are you suggesting that Ireland and Scotland are just full of nonsense, and that only the lucky ones escaped?

Suggesting people escaped for a reason.
