Is "Sudden Acceleration" Past History?

Posted October 19, 2011 7:29 AM

Back in February, the verdict arrived: No electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyota vehicles. But despite the 10-month long, multi-million dollar study, some say no satisfactory explanation for why the company was forced to pull 8 million vehicles off the road has been given and the company still faces lawsuits. Are you satisfied the problem has been solved?

For me:-

1) It happened years ago with Audi, but only in the US, in spite of the fact that the same engine/automatic gearboxes were in use all over the world.

2) It has recently happened with Toyota, but only in the US, in spite of the fact that the same engine/automatic gearboxes were in use all over the world.

It appears to affect certain drivers that probably got their driving licences in a cereal box.....or should not have got one in the first place, or ones hoping to sue for a few million dollars........a mainly US hobby as far as I can tell, though the UK seems to be catching up fast!!!

The changes made to many automatic models recently, like having to press on the foot brake when changing "direction" in the gearbox etc., are also very positive for the Automatic Brigade....

As I recall, we heard nothing more about Toyota when BP took their place in the doghouse (gulf oil spill).

It didn't stop me from buying a new Toyota, and I haven't had a problem with it.

I recently defended a lady friend in a court case for careless driving in Ontario Canada as a result of her Chev Venture experiencing unexplained acceleration in reverse. This happened on two occasions both causing damage to a building and second time a picket fence. My research found that although Toyota had problems GM, Ford, according the USA Gov. stats were quite a bit higher on same complaint of unexplained acceleration. There was even results of inquiry on GM vehicles where a cell phone could send a signal through the tachometer to the computer causing these issues. A friend of mine that is a mechanic with a Toyota Dealership told me that every Toyota that came in under the recall was plugged in to the computer reader and a new or updated program was installed thus the reduction in Toyota incidences. (His opinion) He also told me that there were quite a few complaints of vehicles doing their own thing over the years with no explanation. I am not a Toyota person but it seems they got the Pinto Treatment (gas tanks) due to the publicity of some high profile occurrences. Ford at one time had cruise control issues and there were a lot of GM with cars taking of in reverse or drive while still in park and were verified by witnesses.I presently drive a 2011 focus with electronic throttle control and I dislike this very much since I have little control over the acceleration (I never know just what to expect) My other Focus cars had cable control and I loved to drive them. In a closing note my friend had her case dismissed after showing 30 some similar cases taken from the reporting web site.
