Self-repairing Materials via Adhesives

Posted October 20, 2011 7:31 AM

Researchers recently developed artificial microvascular systems that pump two-component adhesives through 280 µ channels into cracks so that materials can repair themselves vs capillary action, the pumping approach delivers significantly better healing. What applications do you think would benefit from such technology?

I'm not convinced by these 'self repairing' materials.
It strikes me as a one shot botchup being sold as some marvelous organic 'intelligent' material.
Call me an old skeptic if you like...
But if the adhesive is being held somewhere in the first place, then why not put it into the damn material?
If it reqiuires a pump, then it's hardy 'repairing itself' is it?... it's being repaired by pumping adhesive.
If that is defined as repairing it's self, then I could say one of my Yew longbows repaired itself when I had to dig the rot out of a knot and glue over a thin sliver of sapwood.

So... you'll go back in time and manufacture antiques using these self repairing materials?

I see what you mean. I figured the pumping thing was "aftermarket" and not intrinsic. Sure thing, I'm dusting down the Tardis as we blither. By the time I'm done the whole universe will heal itself into a solidified epoxy lump. Entropy, bring it on.
