If they want to know if the American flag is "...still there..." (sounds like the lyrics to national anthem), simply point the Hubbell scope there and LOOK!

The Hubble Telescope is not big enough to see a flag on the moon! You could point it at Earth and see a flag on the Whitehouse!

I remember reading somewhere (cannot find it now) that Hubble, as powerful as it is, would have trouble identifying something the size of a full sized passenger bus on the moon... why would someone leave a bus unattended on the moon? I have no idea.

I can see some merit in the investigation of these abandoned relics. Just how big of a cosmic shooting gallery do we live in? The stuff on the moon will have a definable time of exposure to typical radiation, space flotsam, and the occasional vacation picnic by a family of space travellers.

How critical is it that we collect this info? That is a different question.

Forget the bus on the moon, I'd rather have a full size picture of Doorman's Chick (respectable one of corse)...

Ah, I see I have another fan of the Doorman avatars.

Not long ago another member requested a peek at Doorman's chicks, and I provided this. Sorry, this is the best I can do, decorum being a CR4 watchword.

I clicked your link.

My first thought.................NICE

My second thought....................what MORON(S) voted that post off topic

I realize that it probably posted OT because you replied to an OT.

The OP on that thread complained we we gossiping on his dime. As part of the chatter our friend kvsridhar asked about the Doorman's Chicks, and I put them up for his review. I marked the comment as OT, because it was, and invited the OP to add to the OT mark if he felt sleighted. I was down to three OT, and now it is four... I think Rockyscience figured he was doing me a favor by running the OT up as I had invited (or maybe he thinks it is OT, I don't know).

No, I haven't seen that before... but what a good link. We aren't really discussing optics here, but what a great illustration of the reason a visit to the moon is necessary for the information NASA says is critical. Thanks for that.

Thanks KJK/USA. Help yourself to a henway from petty cash! Take two; they're small.

Astrobiologists, for example, are interested in studying how bacteria in the astronauts' feces have fared after 40 years and if they have undergone gene mutation. Microbes also existed in clothes, food containers and other gear left behind on the moon.

"The crews put their feces bags, urine bags, food containers, their clothes, in a bag and would jettison that out of the hatch prior to liftoff as they tried to shed as much weight for ascent performance," Kelso said.

Could that mean life on Earth descended from a jettisoned gash bag from a passing Vogon freighter?

This Has Nothing To Do With Genetically Altered Astronaut Poo

10/31/2011 9:35 AM

From this, I now know you are also a fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide. I am discovering there are several followers of Ford Prefect, Arthur Dent, Marvin the Paranoid Android, and even the Vogons here at CR4.

For those not familiar with the novels, I hope that I recall correctly: According to The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe, the Earth itself and all life hereon are the greatest computing device ever constructed, commissioned by mice (who are actually super-intelligent three dimensional protrusions into our universe) for the purpose of computing and discovering The Ultimate Question, in an attempt to understand The Ultimate Answer (as was previously generated by the second greatest computing device ever constructed, Deep Thought).

This is contradicted in another novel, but I can't remember where. It is sort of hard to keep everything straight without a program.

I like the prologue of The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe, and have quoted it a few times here at CR4: There is a theory which states that if anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

According to one of the novels, as you have alluded, The King is alive and well.

Whew. This is most definitely OT. Oh, and don't forget your towel.

I can't see you, therefore I am safe.

I'd forgotten the Elvis reference in whichever of the 4 (5 with the posthumously published one) books of the trilogy it was. I was thinking of the (in)famous Sunday Sport front page which claimed to have pohotographic evidence of both a London bus and Elvis on the Moon. And a World War 2 bomber...

Just call me Trillion.

Dearest Trillion:

The novel is Mostly Harmless. Elvis had a pink spaceship that he gifted to the guys.

Well if you cannot believe the Sunday Sport, whom can you believe? In the colonies we have similar tabloids... but without the gratituous female nudity. <sigh> In this respect the English are quite a bit more progressive than the U.S.
