Karen Schroeder, a second-generation resident of the Love Canal neighborhood of Buffalo, New York, gives birth to an infant girl with multiple birth defects. The enormity of the neighborhood's affliction will take a few more years to come to light.

I have read other versions of this sad story.

Hooker Chemical was made out to be the villain in this, but it may be that the school board acquired the site via an eminent domain proceeding, against Hooker's advice that it was indeed a waste dump (and designed as well as was known at the time).
