Posted November 23, 2011 10:17 AM

From Geeks are Sexy Technology News:

University of Washington researchers have created a technology that could allow users to have e-mails beamed directly to their eyeballs. The medium has become the message.

What's next - an implantable router, perhaps?

How do you stop people reading texts while driving?

"has been tested on rabbits without any notable problems"

Which begs the question - How does one teach a rabbit Morse code?

That was very funny; but you don't know that the system was thought for non-driving bunnies (they were given Segways instead) and that they are already attending morse courses at the campus by a bunch of feet drumming professors.

They totally overlooked an even more incredible story here.

"The technology, which can display (or not display) an image via a contact lens has been tested on rabbits without any notable problems."

Nowhere in the entire story is it mentioned that they were able to teach rabbits how to read.

I'm sure rabbits could make good telegraphers, too.

Problems aren't notable by the rabbits. It's one of the advantages of using them to test. They don't fill out their surveys.

The writers do mention some of the less notable problems:

"..A big problem at the moment is that although the wireless range is normally several feet, that's reduced to as little as an inch once the lens is placed inside the eye."

"..it uses a hard plastic (polyethylene terephthalate) for the lens. Not only is that uncomfortable, but it doesn't allow air through to the eye, meaning it can only be worn for a few minutes."

And of course "..they've addressed the most likely hurdle, which is the difficulty in human eyes focusing on an image at such close range. To get round that, they've shaped a lens to shorten the eye's focal distance."

So, we'll shove something painful in our eye which makes the eye functionally blind for other purposes, for long enough to read a short email in morse code, while poking the eye with a wifi antenna.

Sounds to me like the rabbit's revenge.
