Mobile Right to Know

Posted November 28, 2011 9:53 AM

A group representing Apple, Google, and Nokia asked a federal judge to block enforcement of a San Francisco law requiring wireless phone retailers to post what it called "alarmist" warnings about radiation from mobile devices. The first-of-their-kind warnings may discourage consumers from buying and using mobile phones, said CTIA-The Wireless Association. But city officials say the rule helps keep residents informed about possible health effects from mobile phone radiation. Should warning labels be used or is more proof necessary to make the connection between cell phones and cancer?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Wireless Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Wireless Technology today.

Oh, let 'em have their fun. Post those warnings, knock yourselves out.

I have an expectation the warnings will be considered at great length by every consumer considering the purchase of such a deadly device. I ask you to consider the powerful effect of the varied tobacco package warnings from around the world. The international cigarette business has nearly gone broke because of these cautions.

We have here a perfect opportunity for a double-blind study of the effect of warning labels on electromagnetic radiation of cellphones and cancer. The hard part will be how to affix the warning labels to the radiation...

If SF residents want these labels, why not? If the CTIA does not want to label, then don't sell in SF. Who loses?

Scare tactics? Ultimately designed around the idea of using "my phone emits less" as a selling point? Shrewd marketing tool.....

As far as I know the jury is still out on how a device that emits less than a watt effective can do damage.
