Researchers Expose Printer Vulnerability

Posted November 29, 2011 9:19 AM

From Engadget:

Your precious printer might seem innocuous but, in reality, it could be a ticking time bomb just waiting for some hacker to trigger it. Oh, and we mean that not just figuratively, but literally as well -- they could actually be caused to burst into flames by some ne'er-do-well half-way around the globe. Of course, the potential doesn't end at remote arson, an attacker could easily gain access to a network or steal documents, and hijacking the lowly device would require little more than printing an infected file.

Note the source: MSNBC. Of COURSE they would be technically accurate. I mean, it's not like they are in business to create a panic, and gain readership, right?

Disclaimer, then you can shoot at me all you want. I DID NOT READ MSNBC's take on it. I suspect that their IS validity to the claims. I doubt that the University is in MSNBC's pocket. I doubt that HP would outright lie about this. But I WAS a US Government contractor (to the Military/Justice/Executive branches of Government) for 18 1/2 years, and I DO know of many times my company slanted (often with the agreement/collusion of our customer) the truth (Gasp, NO! Would Government REALLY do that?) to meet a pre-determined goal, in reporting.

MSNBC can do no less, and often does. As does ALL media.
