Do You Want Consumers Participating in Design Work?

Posted December 16, 2011 8:01 AM

From choosing graphics to selecting wording, companies are inviting consumers to participate in new packaging development. What do you think of using social media to gather customer input for packaging? Do you think it will make more consumers happy with packaging decisions?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Robotic Systems, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Robotic Systems today.

Any time you can get feedback from the end user of a product, I would consider it a good thing.

The smart managers use every brain they can get their hands on, this includes every one from the janitor to customers and those in between. There will be some sorting out of data but it works. Any company that I worked for that had a suggestion bonus program was astounded by the quality of the suggestions put forth. Huge savings in both process and man power also in many cases reduction in rejects.

Whatever you make and sell should be customer friendly. Packaging also is important aspect. It should protect product from transit damage, long storage but also should be easy to unpack. Many a times customers have to struggle to open the package before reaching the product.

Utilizing input from potential users to fill their needs, to create an object or a product that can encompass a utilitarian purpose and better ones life should be a designers goal. The complaints, dissatisfaction of failed products only proves that logic at the top will not always satisfy the end users need. Aesthetics, combined with design function through smart research is paramount. Creativity can only be harnessed by an informed designer. An art committee can only judge what is brought to the table by the artist /designer.

I totally agree. The designer has the experience to develop the product. The client should be kept aware of your progress with reviews of the product, and invited to input their suggestions. Too often people who clip-art, think they can produce the same product. The artest needs to beaware of the criteria, but, please let the designer do his expertise.

Absolutely not. The end user should present ideas to a representative of the Company. The designer would end up lurching around, reacting to idea after idea, otherwise. A filter is definitely required.

Would you want this?

Of course not. My time is far too valuable. Do you have a mechanism/process to decide which idea to pursue? Would you want an idea to have a potentially negative impact on your Company's brand and reputation?

Secretly, I do too! I love the bubble in the back. And the grille. Killer stuff.

Hmmm, I just destroyed my own argument.

(I love that car, almost as much as I love Jeeps)

*ahem* That car design is what happens then a random (INCREDIBLY random) end user has Final Say on the design. The method that works is to have the end users submit ideas, which are then evaluated by more experienced designers to filter the good ideas from the not-so-good, and to divide the categories into 'this could work as is,' 'this could work with some adjustments,' 'this won't work, but it might spark an idea that will work later,' and 'Ha ha! here's one for the Caption This forum at CR4.'

We have something like this even in my family. My mother is a literal fount of ideas, some good, most bad. But the good ideas are really good, and the bad ideas may give someone else, someone with more knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, or electric wiring, a POV that will let them come up with a good idea they might not have conceived before. The problem is when she acts on her own ideas without consulting others. I mention a French Drain as a way to deal with the basement water issues, then later have a professional waterproofer come in and fix the leaks, which included 'gluing' a polyetheline sheet to the side of the foundation with tar below grade level. Everything's fine, then I find her digging a French Drain along the foundation, which may have pulled the top of the waterproof sheet away from the foundation. (I can't dig down far enough through the gravel filling the French Drain to check.) Also, the French Drain does not go to a dry well or wetland basin, it just stops where the foundation ends. So now we have a French Drain that collects rainwater from the side breezeway and holds it up against the foundation since there's nowhere for it to drain to, and our formerly no-longer-leaking basement has new leaks.

(Self-marking as OT for the rant at the end.)
