Posted December 28, 2011 8:53 AM

Oh PLlllllleeeeaaaasssseeee,

Spare me from having to sit next to some old bitty who is gossiping to one of her old hen friends about "that Agnes" and her new boyfriend.

Now, multiply that by 120 phones and you got a postal meltdown in-the-making.

I'm also not convinced that the cumulative effect of that much signal noise would not affect the systems on the plane somehow.

It's another unnecessary aggravation added to the ever growing list of aggravations associated with air travel.

No, Never!

Electronics have been in cockpits for decades for all phases of flight. Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) have been around for 10 years before iPads.

The single most important reason why there are restrictions for passenger electronics has to do with liability.

The FAA can easily control what goes into a cockpit. Not so easy for controlling what passengers bring on board and how they use it.

The probability for interference is almost nil. The real issue is the liability the airline would incur should there ever be an accident as a result of (or even the possibility of) passenger electronics, which would be huge.

The simplest and least costly method to remove that liability is to prevent their use altogether or at least during the critical phases of flight (landing and takeoff).

I would not call that a little reason and neither do the airlines.

The FAA doesn't necessarily restrict these small devices just because of signal interference reasons. These small devices can actually become quite harmful, even lethal, as debris inside such a small environment during flight if something were to go wrong. Imagine being smacked in the back of the head by a smartphone during a flight emergency.

Somehow, I think a laptop would hurt a lot more.

with the development of electronic technology, the information signals can be hacked and they can be controlled by someone else..they become more dangerous giving no possibility for the pilots. thus many accidents and illegal activities can occur..thus electronic gadgets are restricted for the passengers.also the signal used by pilots to communicate with ground stations become more traffic giving dangerous situations to the pilots at the time of emergency.
