This is really very impressive.

I had some similar ideas a few years ago when I was working in the HVAC controls industry... I'm so pleased that someone set such a great example of how do do it.

I love modular thinking.. it is such a practical thing to do imho.

They didn't construct it in 15 days the erected it in 15 days. How many days to construct or build each section? How long to construct the ground work? These should all have been included in the article.

If you have visited modular home factories in the past few years, you will find they are offering complete buildings, including plumbing, wiring, roofing, drywall, floors, siding, and finishes. These modular homes are very well constructed and seem to meet and surpass many on site constructed homes. Granted, the foundation, the electrical to the panel and the plumbing in and out were not included. Nor as you properly identified was the foundation and hook-ups for the skyscraper. The basic foundation, and water and sewer hook-up usually takes much longer than the 15 days claimed. Still 15 days from the foundation up is impressive for this project. I sense a trend for many skyscrapers, particularly in the hotel business. Perhaps if they can demonstrate the level of earthquake resistance claimed, they would be a good project for places like Haiti.

I have nothing against the technique or the 15 days which is impresive for errecting a building that size. Just the terminology of the article in saying it was "constructed" in 15 days.

My best friend had a two story 4000 sq ft pre-fab done back in PA about 15 years ago. Took them three month in the factory to "construct" every thing. While that was going on they "constructed" the ground work, basement, plumping/ electricial hook-up, etc. They "errected" and hooked everything up in two days. This included transporation and the fact in came in five parts.

You are very correct about the article also not including factory time. My guess is that factory labor is a lot less costly than construction labor. However,I also suspect that the on site construction would take longer than its comparable factory construction and have less quality control. So, even if the factory time was the same as on site construction time, the factory built unit would likely be superior and cheaper. It more than likely will be on budget once contracted. The big disadvantage for a home owner would be not having much capability to change things, as most often happens, during construction. I built a custom home recently and that took over a year and 4 months to complete. My wife made many changes during construction and the builder was very accommodating. And over budget and time but I am not complaining.

A large hotel chain would like this system of "erection " if only to know everything would be on time and on budget. A construction union would also have minimum impact.

Your point about the article being misleading is apt. But that is the nature of most news and those in the business must read the article with their tongue in cheek.

It should be quicker then building them on the gound its built on an assembly line. More then likely with robots and not humans. You know to help stimulate the economy by having less workers in work.

Some times progress isn't better.

Really, this is old news. I saw an article related to this construction technique for erecting a similar Chinese hotel building over 3 years ago......

Innovative and very kewl technology nonetheless!
