Scosche Debuts Accessory That Blocks All Cell Phone Use In Cars

Posted January 23, 2012 2:07 PM

From Autoblog:

Scosche has created a new device designed to disable cell phones while driving. The cellCONTROL uses Bluetooth to block calls the instant a vehicle begins moving. According to the company, users activate the system online, download an application onto their mobile phone and plug a trigger unit directly into the vehicle's OBD-II port. Once installed, the cellCONTROL automatically blocks telephone functions, from ingoing and outgoing calls to SMS, MMS, and internet connectivity. The device isn't a blanket block, however. According to Scosche, the device lets the phone to work as intended once a hands-free headset is detected.

This might get around the issue of "Willful Interference" Part 15 of the FCC law.

However, I don't see much use for something that is installed by the car owner so they can't use their own phone.

You could save $129 if you simply don't use your phone while driving.

In fact, I am part of a Pilot Program I created called "Just Don't Use Your Phone While Driving".

The program is free, there is nothing to buy or download, and if you need instructions on how it works you probably do not qualify for a driver's license anyway.

My teenagers are grown and gone, but I could see this being of interest if they were still at home. At least slow down the daughters, as well as the already distracting in-car friends, yakking on their phones.

Seems simple to me. If you use the phone while driving I will revoke your driving privileges. End of conversation.

Also, what is preventing the person who wants to subvert this thing from simply using a different phone?

"If you use the phone while driving I will revoke your driving privileges. End of conversation." I am with you on this, but in my family it would be unenforceable. Ex-Mrs. Doorman #1 would have immediately reversed any such dictum (there are a number of reasons she is ex). In any case, I am old enough that cell phones for my high school kids was not an issue.

From the OP: "... and plug a trigger unit directly into the vehicle's OBD-II port." What if the trigger unit is removed?" Your point about a different phone is valid; so the friend with a cell phone must also be enrolled? All of them? I agree with your comments in #1, this system hardly seems resistant to defeat.

All this being said, to whom is this being marketed?

[edit] Del, I agree with AH; you should be in the exclusive 400 club. Congratulations!

What about a big spring loaded spike that comes out of the centre of the steering wheel if you use the phone?

Save that one for when the car goes into a skid on ice. It creates more drama during the skidding process.

Re: Scosche Debuts Accessory That Blocks All Cell Phone Use In Cars

Forget about a device that blocks the phone as I agree with others it sounds like a pain to set up and easy to bypass if you want to.

What I want is a button on my phone that sets my phone into car mode so that if someone calls instead of my normal voicemail they get something saying the person you are calling is driving and will get back to you when they arrive at their destination. If it does this automatically when I am in the car, that would be even better, I would think with bluetooth this would also not be that difficult.

While I don't talk on my phone while driving sometimes if I know a call is important I will open up my phone in my lap, shout I am driving and will call you back soon, and hang. Something that did that for me would be nice, so the person calling doesn't think I just ignored them. However I would pay only about $20 for the thing and I don't need it to link with OBD II especially since my cars are before 96 and don't have OBD II.

Unlike the home phone where the person calling could think you are out, with a cell phone people tend to think you are ignoring them if you don't pick up.

Most cell phones have this feature - It's called turn it off and let the caller go to voice mail - Your message can say "you are away from the phone or driving"!

I'm with the folks that think self control is the best option.

The KrisDelTM phone on/off switch is cheaper. Check their catalogue: part number 40 6553 12 (usual disclaimer).

I agree with everyone here. I've got to be the devil's advocate though.

At least in the US, the first time someone drives off the road, crashes, becomes trapped in the car, and can't use their cell phone...................Scosche will likely be sued out of existence.

I also like the option of using the phone in an emergency and it may be necessary to keep moving when that happens, so stopping is not an option.

Yeah, there's that too. I don't think I'll be investing in this company.

Maybe another outfit will develop an accessory that unblocks the original accessory in case of an emergency.

Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!

Preventing distracted/impaired driving is a laudible goal, but inviting external control to replace self-control has a way of getting out of hand--especially when governing authorities get involved. Mothers, not technologies, should be the ones to protect us from ourselves.
