Posted January 24, 2012 3:06 PM

I really don't care where the computing power comes from as long as I have large multiple monitors to do my work on.

Obviously, my monitors are not portable (one is a 30" monitor) and any computer that drives them just needs to have a smaller (or equal) footprint than my current solution, which is a mid sized tower.

My workstation also has multiple solid state drives and dual ethernet ports. The only downsides to my setup is its nominal footprint and the current draw from the wall outlet. Other than that I have no compelling reason to make a switch until software outclasses its current processing power.

I always leaned toward large laptops with nice large monitors. I just got an I-Pad2, and personal used my laptop only about a half a dozen times in the last month. I been basically Doing project management as of late. Not requiring high end versatility. With the I-Pad, I am enjoying the light weight, portability and long battery life. Seems Palm really missed the opportunity, they were so close and ahead of everyone else with their Titanium PDA, to take it one step farther to a tablet.

there's no real substitute for a proper keyboard & larger monitor

as AH points out some tasks require fullsized tools, the size of the box containing the working bits may not be a real consideration...

there will be a market for what is in effect a netbook

don't write the obituary for the desktop PC quite yet, though the distinctions between different types of devices will continue to blur

Yes! Of course they will. Unless something hotter and faster, in a smaller footprint, comes along first.

I don't agree. People are still buying desktops and offices and professionals cannot rely on laptops or ultrabooks. Desktops will always be required. There ate still so many review sites like Binary Store publishing reviews on the latest desktop computers.
