How Much Energy Do You Waste Charging Your Cellphone?

Posted January 29, 2012 10:37 AM

From Scientific American:

How many chargers do you own? One for your cellphone? Another for your laptop? Yet another for your tablet, podcast player or even electric toothbrush? It adds up.

Last I read about waste of engery was over 7,500 barrels of oil a day nationwide just to keep that clocks on VCR'S and DVD plays lite when the machine is off.

that was about the year they started adding the Instant On electronics in things. They use only small amounts of power but multiply that by millions of devices and that is a lot of waste.

How very unScientific American. They should probably change the name of their magazine to Politically-Charged Science American. They have a point, but only to a (minor, very minor) point. Most chargers produced over the last 5 or 6 years are VERY efficient and have sleep modes when they are not actually charging a battery. It's very easy to find the bad apples in the bunch. Plug the charger into the wall but don't plug in the tool, phone, laptop to the charger. Leave it sit for a few hours. If it doesn't feel warm to the touch, it's NOT wasting enough energy to even worry about.

This is a worthless grandstanding effort by a bunch of sanctimonious greenie weenies in Kalifornia who like to throw their weight around and not give a tinker's cuss as to the repercussions of their feel-good actions.

Efficiency is the key. And the game that can be played across the board, is a numbers game. In almost any "area" of energy consumption, we can predict that a 1% increase in efficiency will demonstrate, what appears to be a significant savings. The cost to get to that increase in efficiency is often overlooked. And the energy required to produce the more efficient devices has to be amortized over "some period" to see the truer cost. The article doesn't provide this kind of analysis.

But I wouldn't argue with the question, "Are we operating at peak efficiency in our energy lives?" Obviously, no.

I forgot to put a link I thought informative in my previous post.
