Retaining the positions of the first and last letters helps a lot; it is much more difficult with total scrambling. Scrabble™ players are great at this, though.

Pattern recognition. At the end of the day - or ore accurately at the start of our history, we small weak and defenceless mammals had to find ways to stay ahead of the larger, faster, bigger toothed predators. We also had to watch out for the silent, lurking predators and find the hiding prey animals.

In one way or another, in rain forests, on the savannahs, in the tall grasses and on the frozen tundra, all these other hid. We (along with them) had to be able to spot both the dangers and the food...and we do this through pattern recognition.

It's the same brainsuge that lets us see meaningful shapes in clouds, tealeaves and on pieces of toast. Our brain will not believe that anything is random...which is why gamblers see lucky streaks.

Pattern Recognition.

I had to think about "53RV35" for a second, but you're right--it quickly gets easier.

(But then I'm a former tournament Scrabble player, which gives a leg up on stuff like this.)

For some related fun, look up "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut" or "Mairzy Doats".
