UV Bottle Cap Promises Dead Bacteria On The Go

Posted February 13, 2012 1:46 PM

From DVICE:

When you are planning to put in some serious time on the trail, the goal is to pack light. There is nothing more annoying than having a bunch of fiddly gadgets for everything. That's why integrating the purifier - in this case a UV bulb - into the lid of your water bottle is such a good idea.

A hunnerd and fifteen bucks... each... for a water bottle.

How have I survived so long using a repurposed Gatorade bottle and some chlorine tabs? How long until the military embraces this? Does LynDoor™ Industries have something to do with this?

This device opens a lot of questions before anyone uses it. How many μwatts/cm2 flux does this device impart at full flow. Is it NSF approved? 100 micron filtration is not small enough to filter many UV resistant pathogens. The device would give someone a false sense of security and remote travelers need to be very wary of such devices. There are many things that can survive most low UV dosages and still be viable. One micron should be a minimum and use a good ceramic filter with a little iodine in the filtered water for 20 minutes. I would consider this a hazardous device and should not be allowed on the market. Don't buy it based on the information presented.
