'Poppy Quarter' Behind Spy Coin Alert

Posted May 07, 2007 9:54 AM

From USATODAY.com Tech - Top Stories:

WASHINGTON — An odd-looking Canadian coin with a bright red flower was the culprit behind the U.S. Defense Department's false espionage warning earlier this year, The Associated Press has learned. The odd-looking — but harmless — "poppy coin" was so unfamiliar to suspicious U.S. Army contractors traveling in Canada that they filed confidential espionage accounts about them. The worried contractors described the coins as "anomalous" and "filled with something man-made that looked like nano-technology," according to once-classified U.S. government reports and e-mails obtained by the AP.

I'm not sure I would rush if there are 30 million of them. I saw a stack of old Uk thrupenny bits at a boot fair recently for 20p each - would it have been a good buy ? (about 200 I'd say ). Please don't tell me I missed out big-time !

I've got at least 50 of them in my quarter jar as we speak, if there is a demand for these coins it'll be inflated and have an incredibly small bubble.

Just a bunch of paranoid spy's in a world of Science fiction becoming fact

There's always somebody on e-bay . It's all in the sales pitch. The other 29,999,950 coins might distort the value a bit.

HI Kris !

With the state quarters collectors now up to 150 million or so, a mear 30 million of the poppy quarters that were minted they will become scarce in a few years so hang on to them and watch the prices go up as the collectors get in on the this mintage.

good luck

I do get a chuckle out of this.

If Canada wanted to spy on anyone using coins, would they not simply make them look like every other coin, and not stand out so obviously? Or... perhaps the idea was to stand out so that people would quickly debunk the growing paranoia, while quietly in the background, 3 or 4 hundred actual spy coins of the thirty million or so poppy quarters minted were successfully sending their nanotech-acquired intel back to the Department of Veterans Affairs... hmmm

Paranoia is an excessive anxiety or fear concerning one's own well-being which is considered irrational and excessive, perhaps to the point of being a psychosis. This typically includes persecutory beliefs concerning a likely threat.
