UAW Tells Senators Fuel Economy Bill is 'Extreme'

Posted May 08, 2007 9:57 AM

From detnews.com - Autos Insider:

WASHINGTON -- The United Auto Workers and the trade group that represents Detroit automakers sent strongly worded letters to a key Senate committee on Monday urging members to reject a bill that would dramatically raise fuel economy standards. The Senate Commerce Committee is set to vote today on the proposed bill, which calls for raising fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020, with 4 percent annual increases to follow indefinitely.

It's pretty sad when the only thing labor and management can agree upon is government protection for mediocrity. How is there not a market for cars, pickups and SUVs with better gas mileage?

I find it unbelievable that the auto industry can consistently make the wrong decision almost every time. Although, I also can't understand with the gas prices heading up the way they are, that the general public also doesn't seem to be responding and are driving more and buying gas guzzlers as much as ever. What does everyone think will happen to oil and gas availability and price in the future?

What do you expect? The oil industry runs the auto industry and the government. Till that strangle hold is broken we the people are screwed into the ground, and there isn't a damned thing we can do about it,except to fight back from the grass roots. Keep working on alternate energy sources. Some day we'll brake the oil industry, or they will brake themselves.

Well then fight back at the grass roots it is! Drive more fuel efficiently and buy more fuel efficient cars or better yet use mass transportation whenever possible. Support energy conservation and the development of alternative energy sources whenever possible. Push your elected officials to do the same. Never elect another oil man as president or into any public office. Anything else?

35 mpg is easy with current hybrid technology. They just need to quit making excuses.

People are going to buy what they want no matter what the congress critters do. The whole CAFE thing leaves out so many vehicles that it really doesn't matter much anyway. So this is just more "feel good" legislation that makes good press but doesn't amount to much.

If you're really interested in burning less fuel then get a motorcycle. My BMW R1200GS averages 50mpg for my daily commute. It's got luggage for the briefcase, lunch box and rain gear (just in case). Yeah, it's not practical in winter, but that's my problem....

Hybrids are useless in flat terrain. Without dynamic braking to put power back into the batteries, or maybe home-solar power to charge them, you are still ultimately getting the power from the gas, and losing efficiency converting it back and forth.

The real problem is emissions requirements. Not all exhaust gasses are measured, and in some cases, the better running engines produce more of certain emmissions. GM stopped the small block chevy due to emissions req'mts, and the newer, emissions compliant engine gets LESS MPG. How is that logical?

And let us not forget, lighter cars built to satisfy MPG reqm'ts cost thousands of lives each year. Doing 55mph in a tinfoil box is not safe!!

Hybrids are useless full stop. Common rail turbo diesel technology is the way to go.
