IBM: 'We must build an Exascale computer before 2024'

Posted April 02, 2012 8:28 AM

From Engadget:

ASTRON has enlisted the help of IBM to lead a five-year, $43 million project to develop and build a supercomputer for the new Square Kilometer Array. The SKA is a $2.1 billion initiative to construct the world's largest radio telescope across a 3,000km strip of Australia or South Africa. It's hoped to be around 50 times as powerful as the dishes we currently point heavenward and will be used to examine the deepest reaches of space to learn more about the formation of the universe.

Hmmm...$43M to "develop and build"...maybe the building to support the supercomputer, but the computer itself may cost a bit more. As I remember, the first 20TeraFlop super computer cost north of $200M to "develop and build" and that did not include the building that housed it! But maybe there is a new economy of scale that I'm not aware of. I'll be very curious to see what the MTBF of this beast works out to be!

Nah, they are just gearing up in advance for when windows OS 10 comes out 2024 with its ultimate bloatware background operations package.

18 teraflops/sec will be needed just run the little paperclip guy around when you "f" up your spelling in MS word.
