Mythbusters Tests The Square Wheel Theory

Posted April 10, 2012 7:27 AM

From Autoblog:

The Mythbusters have finally tackled the long-unanswered question, "Why don't cars have square wheels?" What's that? You've never wondered why? Neither have we, because it's freaking obvious. But equally obvious is how awesome it would be to test out a square-wheeled vehicle anyway, which is exactly what the Mythbusters guys did, using an older Ford F-Series pickup.

Paint it red and it will run smoother.

Square wheels???? I guess this is what they had to come up with to fill their cannon episode time slot.

Would you get better traction if you put square wheels on a Cavalier?

It's the roads that are all wrong.

Reminds me of some of the dirt backroads I'd occasionally need to drive on when I lived in Florida many years ago. There were known as 'washboard roads' due to their similarity to the old washboards women people used for washing clothes early last century. I think square wheels would have helped. I noticed the ride got smoother once you got going pretty fast, as the Mythbusters noticed too.

It's a bit like hitting a cattlegrid - there's usually a sweet spot in the speed of attack, probably dependent on the suspension charctarististics. If only roads had regular spaced pot-holes !

It'd be fun if mythbusters had solved the axle problem for a Releaux wheel.

"Why don't cars have square wheels?"

Works for shopping carts.
