The Golf Swing Analyzing Watch

Posted May 17, 2007 11:41 AM

From OhGizmo!:

I'm no golfer but I have seen plenty of infomercials with various contraptions designed to help you analyze and improve your golf swing. So far this one wins when it comes to simplicity. It's basically just a wristwatch with three built-in accelerometers capable of recording 200 measurements a second from the start of your backswing until you you make contact with the ball.

So if I get this right the watch doesn't know what a good golf swing is but it takes a bunch on measurements which may or may not be relevant to a good golf swing so you can make your golf swing consistent. I guess if you happen to hit upon a good swing you can remember (or maybe the watch can if you tell it to) the measurements for that "good" swing and try to be consistent. I don't think it will put your local golf pros out of business but it's pretty cool and could actually help. At least it might help you if you need a present idea for a golfer who has everything.

It's probably a good training aid, but may not be allowed under the rules of golf.

I doubt that when the rules of golf were invented such a thing existed. Didn't I see the other day that laser distance measurements devices were just approved for PGA play?

I wouldn't be surprised, I'm not a golfer, but a have a few colleagues who are. There comments are revealing! The consensus is that most golf committees would rather spend an afternoon arguing about dress code; socks of all things, then worry about how technology is effecting the game. I can't get passed the idea that you don't have to bend down to pick up a golf ball anymore! Sport?.......
