"So after a long day at the range (or at the top of a clock tower)..."

Extremely bad taste.

The line was written by Gizmodo contributor Andrew Tarantola. It is his piece, and my comment is directed at the practice of using a tragedy to sensationalistic effect (or worse, a failed attempt at comedic effect). I find that technique to be in very poor taste, but his writing is not a reflection on your choice to place the article here for us.

Regarding the instructions themselves... Just what is "firearm solvent"? Why would I want to dissolve a firearm? How about "firearm treament", and what is it for? Firearm treatment is not mentioned after the 'Material Required' list. There is, however, a glaring omission of preservative.

We could go on, pick this article to death. This article is much too generic of a description for the several thousand different firearms in common use.

What the RN did/does, is to clean each barrel between rounds shot.

Now how clever is that?

We, its not really difficult, the is a THICK plug of white metal (as in car engine bearings) sitting in the cordite cartridge between the cordite and the shell. On fixed ammo you cannot see it, only when the shell and the cordite case are loaded seperately.

When firing, this is atomized and cleans the barrel as it pushes the shell out. The hot gases behind that make the barrel dirty again.

The next shot cleans the barrel again and gets it dirty again.

That way you only clean off the powder residue of the final shot!! Makes life much easier......
