From the article they are just creating a fake gps signal to make the drone think it is someplace it is not. As long as you know the direction the drone is headed, I would imagine all you would need a gps simulator an rf amplifier and a directional antenna on gps frequencies. Then you just send the drone fake coordinates, say you want it to go left you send it coordinates telling it, it is too far to the right of where it should be and the drone would correct it's self by going left.
This is just a guess of course, perhaps their is more to it than that, but the basic idea seems simple enough.
I'm sure it was just a bench mark experiment and that I'm sure there are security in place or available, as a guess, such as rolling freqencies or access code (simular to a garage door opener)

Oh, by the way, the drone they took control of was a non-military rotary wing aircraft. All the military drones use the encrypted GPS channels with anti-spoofing capabilities.
It would take the resources of a nation state to deploy a system capable of spoofing or even just jamming the GPS signals. And to boot, while they were doing that, our SIGINT folks would draw a bead on that emitter and send a little gift their way in the form of a HARM missile or similar.
I don't think the problem is military drones, but if the sky is full of drones using civilian GPS, it will only be a matter of time before somebody tries to spoof one. You can't send a missile after someone in the middle of a city.
Cant send a missle after someone in the middle of a city? Seems to me the US government is not worried about killing a few innocent women and children to get their target. And if they miss the target, oh well, they just send another missle. BTW-there is no technology that stays secret forever. How long before foreign drones are cruising the USA? As you sow, so shall ye reap.

Seriously...? The United States pioneered the movement to minimize collateral damage using smart weapons (to our detriment). This has increased the cost per combatant killed, AND set the expectation that ANY civilian loss is a tradgedy (unrealistic given combatant tactics of hiding among general population).
To make matters worse, un unobjective and biased media is there to record ANY mishap. You think our enemies give two rips about OUR civilian casulaties..? (ref: 9-11).
I dislike responding to trolls like you spaceracer... but I dislike misinformation and ignorance MORE.
So, you call me names because I object to civilian casualties? Please, what is your definition of "troll"? My observations are made to contribute to the discussion, if you feel I should not participate please let me know, I did not realise I was spreading "misinformation and ignorance", my apologies for offending you. As for the enemy giving "two rips" about our civilian casualties, are you implying we should stoop to their level? I disagree. I respectfully disagree, is that more to your liking?

I was trying to point out the fact that others will be attempting to hack the drones and by using them we will all be at risk, and I dont feel the need to justify my responses. Nor do I have time to engage in a flame war so this is the last you will hear from me on the subject. Also, I notice your lack of posts, could it be your just using one of several aliases to go out of bounds? Your so clever, what chance would I have? Im just an uneducated old fool, but you still have not specified what "ignorance and misinformation" you meant. If you dont tell me I will not be able to avoid repeating my ignorant misinformed response. And finally I would say "You cant beat the Devil at his own game!"

Misinformation: "Seems to me the US government is not worried about killing a few innocent women and children to get their target."
Ignorance: "And if they miss the target, oh well, they just send another missle."
Those were not the "Rules of Engagement" when I served at the start of Desert Storm, where we demonstrated our compassion for minimizing collateral damage. Not sure if you have fought in a war, and been in a position to kill someone in defense of a mission... soldiers do not like war, and don't kill for sport. More ignorance.
I'm sure you are educated, you just went a bit off-topic with your "beliefs"... and as such, mark it that way in the future. Baseless conspiracy theories, such as me using an alias.... :) I have no patience for. Cute though.
Seems to me the US government is not worried about killing a few innocent women and children to get their target.
That is not totally true. That is the reason smart weapons were developed.
It also depends on the administration in office at the time. What I have seen lately, is if the administration cares more about foreigners well being, more then the well being and security of its U.S. Citizens.
