Stephen Hawking gets a lot of press for being brainy - and deserves it - but my vote for smartest guy on the planet would go to Roger Penrose. Aside from all of his work in theoretical physics - black holes, relativity, quantum mechanics - the list goes on for a while, he was also responsible for the 'impossible objects' that M C Escher used in his artwork. And of course, he invented the unique, non-repeating, tiling pattern shown in the picture.

I agree with your assessment of Penrose- in fact, I find his writings much more accessible than hawking's...
