Experiments Scientists Would Do If They Lived Indefinitely

Posted September 05, 2012 10:04 AM

From Scientific American:

A lifetime is very long relative to the picosecond it takes for two atoms to form a molecule, but it is the blink of an eye compared to many natural phenomena, from the rise of mountain chains to the collisions of galaxies. To answer questions that take more than a lifetime to resolve, scientists hand their efforts down from one generation to the next. In medical science, for example, longitudinal studies often follow subjects well after the original researchers have passed; some studies that are still ongoing started as far back as the 1920s. The record for the most extensive sequence of uninterrupted data gathering in history may belong to the ancient Babylonians' Astronomical Diaries, which contain at least six centuries' worth of observations from the first millennium B.C.; those records have revealed recurring patterns in such events as solar and lunar eclipses.

I bet that Ben Franklin experiment with the kite would have been better.

That is only 40 to 50 years away with the present growth rate in computer power to achieve the computational ability to do just that (and I am sure we will).

Of course we will be nearly 14 billion years behind, but I suspect that there will be nothing technically preventing us from fast forwarding through the boring spots...

Oh, look, who's that in the grassy knoll?

More like replacing video games or reality TV, particularly since you can play god and throw a few curveballs into the simulation after you have had a few too many brews. :)

Hmm, this is getting scary-real like... :O

If I were a scientist, I imagine available time would be a very important variable; but not nearly as important as funding. I do not recall seeing that important second variable defined in the blog piece; perhaps limitless funding was inferred?

If I were a scientist, with unlimited time and funding, I would do what I have always wanted to do.

See how fast a manmade object can travel.

I would integrate recently enabling technologies to explore and define field reaction propulsion. Build a propulsion system that uses the Solar Magnetic Field, Planetary Magnetic Fields, and eventually the Magnetic Fields of Galaxies as reaction fields to vector impulse; where fuel mass fraction is defined through the equations of relativity instead of the equations of kinematics.

Perhaps it is not time or esoteric understanding that stymies science. Perhaps it is the lost art of inspiration; and the inability to lead the many to strive for common good instead of self interest.

I'd perfect time travel.

I'd have "all the time in the world" to do it.

Then I could come back and have my way with history.

Well, in that case, I'll take a double cheeseburger (nix the onions), an order of tater tots and a chocolate malt (extra malt, please) from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Make sure they throw in some extra condiments.

And make it snappy!

With adequate data storage and search capability, along with sustained interest over generations, a lot of these questions may get answered. It's saddening to know that I, and most of the respondents, will not be around to see it.

Even sadder is the thought that mankind may not be able to sustain enough interest to maintain funding for any activity that does not provide profit or personal power.
