Grasscrete

Posted May 29, 2007 5:11 PM

From TechEBlog:

Researchers in China have developed "Grasscrete", "an environmentally sustainable alternative paving system used to create footpaths while leaving room for greenery." It will be part of Olympic Forest Park in northern Beijing, a multimillion-dollar, 680-hectare space being built for next year's Olympic Games.

This looks like the inverse of a system used in the UK for 30+ years to make car parks. We use a honeycomb-style lattice which allows the grass to grow through the central holes - whilst allowing cars to drive across, even in the wet, without tearing up the grass to a muddy swamp.

It fell out of favour in the 80s, but seems to be making a come-back. The interesting thing is that where no cars drive/people walk, the grass just takes over completely.

We have used similar in the US for many decades. We just place pavers or flat stones in the lawn where a path is desired. Mowing is simple as the pavers are place just slightly above ground level and mow as normal, even edging is easy when necessary.

Maybe this is different in some way though.

Then you need to develop the "no heels" technique of walking in stillettos. Useful for gratings, cobbles and in church - to avoid making lots of noise during the quiet bits!

he he . A couple of days ago , my wife said she'd seen a thing about collapsable stiletto heels on shoes . A bit like the new 'wheely heel' things , but designed for the lady in a hurry . Sounds great but I haven't looked up a link yet . Did you hear this one ? Apart from being clever , it sounds very funny. I've seen many women change from trainers to heels on route to work -whoever thought of this is canny.

I still can't find it and she can't recall a reference ! I'm sure it was genuine (possibly a GMTV story ). I'll continue to look and will find it - I'm a bit busy for a few days so hold on. I know the profile of the shoes sole sound like a problem , but I can imagine such an invention. If it comes to it I shall make one . Jimmy Choo beware !
