Goodyear Unveils Self-Inflating Tires for Big Trucks

Posted September 22, 2012 4:33 PM

From Autoblog:

Goodyear has developed a new self-inflating tire for commercial vehicles. The Air Maintenance Technology system uses an internal pressure regulator to determine when the tire is low. When pressure falls below a certain parameter, the regulator opens to allow air into a pumping tube. Here's the cool part: the tube runs around the circumference of the tire, and as tire rolls, it squeezes the tube, effectively forcing air into the tire through an inlet. Once the tire is properly inflated, the regulator closes off the pumping tube and the truck continues on its way without ever stopping or having to rely on an external compressor.

But what are the unintended consequences of system failure? Still a very cool idea....

You still get a flat tire that eventually shreds itself if driven on too long just like the old style does.

I was thinking more like the valve got stuck and kept pumping air into the tire until a catastrophic failure occurred....BABOOOM!

A situation easily remedied with a bleed-off valve for overpressure conditions and a TPM warning to alert the driver to a problem.

On a side note - a few weeks back I was driving about a 100 yards back from a big rig when one of the rear tires suddenly blew out. The sound was so loud it woke up my wife in the passenger seat and she thought we had hit something in the road. And that was with the windows up, the AC on and radio playing.
