New Standard Will Cut EV Charging Time

Posted October 24, 2012 2:17 PM

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) approved a revised standard last week that will let electrified vehicles charge their batteries much quicker -- in as little as 10 minutes for plug-in hybrids or 20 minutes for battery-electric cars. The standard brings new technology to public charging stations and parking garages, but not to homes.

With, "500V and currents of up to 200A" I see explosions, fire and electrocutions in the future of EV cars.

I wonder if the same thoughts crossed peoples minds when they decided to enclose 14 gallons of highly combustible fuel

Since it was a step up from the horse (potentially containing gallons of something equally as destructive) I think they were willing to take the risks.

Its all relative to what we know and understand and am familiar with.

At night I often times have to drive a tanker truck with as much as 7200 gallons of fuel backwards between tanker unit trains with less than 3 feet on each side of me while each train is carrying 3 million gallons of fuel or crude oil.

500 volts at 200 amps doesn't scare me one bit!

The standard will do it?...or will technology do it?

It's hard to compete with the rate of energy transfer of the gas pump - in about two minutes enough energy is transferred to move the vehicle 300-400 miles. Many stations have about 10 gas pumps and most cities have lots of gas stations. I would think that if it takes 5 times as long to charge, you would need 5 times as many charging stations as gas pumps.

If everyone drove electric cars, there would be 5 people each drawing 100KW from the power grid during the time you are filling your tank. I'm thinking we might have to build a few new power plants.
