London Array: World's Largest Offshore Wind Farm Generates Energy for the First Time

Posted October 30, 2012 9:48 AM

From INHABITAT:

DONG Energy, E.On and Masdar just announced that their joint venture the London Array - soon to be the world's largest offshore wind farm - switched on for the first time today! The wind farm, which started construction in March of 2011, is situated 12 miles off of the coasts of Kent and Essex in the Thames Estuary. It will be the the largest off-shore wind farm in the world when completed, and it will boast 175 wind turbines by the end of its first phase, which is projected to be at the end of the year.

I love Wind-farms; they're beautiful and use lots of engineering services.

But, and it's a big but, the electricity they produce is about 3 times the cost of Coal or Nuke power.

The article doesn't bother to mention the final cost or the amount of power it will produce so it's really just a bit of advertising fluff.

From a web site for this project:

"The London Array could eventually power up to 750,000 homes".

No estimated cost was in the article.

Just below it said 1st phase: 630 MegaWatt, to power 750,000 homes & 2nd phase 870 MegaWatt. No mention of cost.
