Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Tech 101: How and Why a Fluid Coupling Works

Posted January 07, 2013 9:30 AM by dstrohl

If you're familiar with automatic transmissions, then you know that the torque converter essential to the transmission's operation is essentially a type of fluid coupling, but how exactly does a fluid coupling work? The U.S. Army felt it was necessary to train its mechanics in a fluid coupling's operating principles in 1953, and the resulting instructional video - which we found via Hackaday - remains a good primer on those principles today. Also, for you carspotters, a couple cool military vehicle cameos.

Watch the video on Hemmings.

Excellent video.
I had a reasonable idea how it worked, but that really showed what goes on.
My only quibble is Mrs Cat wouldn't watch it with me in the back row, and I didn't have any popcorn.

Maybe that wasn't the kind of coupling she was interested in.

In my company we used to fit Fluid Coupling on the Long Travel Drive of the E.O.T Cranes. It used to give smooth starting and stopping of the Crane. Thus avoiding use of slip ring motor.

Cute--it also explains the vane scheme in a regenerative turbine blower or pump.
